Common Reasons Why Your AC Won’t Turn On

June 27, 2019

Nothing’s quite as frustrating as when your AC won’t turn on, especially if it happens during the hot summer months in Colorado Springs. Before calling for air conditioning repairs, there are a few things you can do yourself to troubleshoot the problem.

Usually, when an air conditioner quits working, there may be a simple reason as to why. Read on to determine if one of these common issues is the culprit.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

A tripped circuit breaker is particularly common during warmer weather because the air conditioner has to work extra hard to cool your home. If the circuit overloads, the breaker can trip, which could prevent your air conditioner from starting. To verify if this is your problem, look at the AC switch on your electrical panel. If the breaker is in the “off” position, simply turn it to “on.”

If this problem persists several times, refrain from turning the breaker back on. If the breaker trips multiple times, it could be an indication of damage to the electrical unit, which could be a fire risk.

Thermostat Problems

If your thermostat has quit working, your air conditioner won’t start. Look at the display panel on the thermostat to see if it’s blank. If you see a blank panel, replace the batteries on the thermostat. If that doesn’t fix the issue, it may be time to invest in a new thermostat.

Blown Fuse

The fuse box is usually located on the outside of the house in proximity to the air conditioner’s condenser unit. Shut off electricity to your air conditioner from the breaker panel and use a multimeter to conduct a continuity test. If you can’t detect an electrical charge, you can purchase replacement fuses from a hardware store. Just be sure to write down the make and model of your air conditioner first.
